What is an LPC Associate?

Are you looking for a new counselor? You might see a big difference in the types of credentials. How do you know which one is right for you? Let’s take a look at the differences between an LPC and an LPC Associate.

An LPC has an independent or unencumbered license, meaning they can practice independently without supervision in a given state. A Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (LPC Associate) is a mental health professional authorized to provide psychotherapy under an LPC Supervisor’s (LPC-S) supervision. This may be the best option for you.

One reason is that LPC associates are under supervision, meaning there’s an extra set of eyes over your treatment. Supervisors are specially trained and certified to help guide associates through the counseling process. Because LPC associates practice under their supervisor’s license, LPC supervisors are motivated to ensure their associates practice ethically. It’s almost like having two counselors for the price of one.

Pricing can be a big reason here for many people because LPC associates are not fully licensed professionals in most areas, they typically charge less than a fully licensed LPC. If you’re paying out of pocket and this is a concern for you, an LPC associate might be the way to go.

One last reason is that your level of care is the same level you would get with an LPC. While LPC associates are new to the field, they are not new to counseling. They have already completed an extensive graduate internship with hundreds of hours. Remember also that they are being directly supervised to ensure you are getting the proper care for you.
